Lessons in Resilience: Learning to Survive–and Thrive–in a Pandemic

Nonprofits in time of COVID-19

In the fall of 2020, the LaPorte Nonprofit Industry Group surveyed a representative group of our clients which included regional nonprofit leaders. The intent of the survey was to gain an understanding of how their particular organizations were affected by COVID-19 and what lessons or best practices helped them respond to the challenges.

The stories we heard were so inspirational, we decided to create a series of webinars and blogs so that regional nonprofit leaders could share inspirational stories of their specific challenges and the steps they took to not only keep moving forward, but also to achieve unanticipated success.

We kicked off the first of a two-part webinar series with a panel discussion which touched on:

  • Doubling down on your mission
  • Benefiting from strategic partnerships
  • Importance of communication with your audience
  • Embracing flexibility and change

The speakers for this first panel discussion were:

  • Cynthia Nunes Colbert, MSW – CEO/President, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston
  • Ginger Laurent – COO, Louisiana Bankers Association
  • Suzanne Raether – Executive Director, The Roots of Music
  • Jodee Daroca – President and CEO, Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Louisiana

We continued the webinar series with a new group of panelists offering their perspective on:

  • Keeping momentum going
  • Meeting clients where they were through readiness and reinventing how the organization saw themselves
  • Taking the time to evaluate systems and overhauling what isn’t working
  • Supporting strategic partnerships and advocacy efforts

Our panelists for this second panel discussion were:

  • Deborah Laine – Executive Director, Clear Creek Education Foundation
  • Hermione Malone – Executive Director, Good Work Network
  • Wendy Beron – President, Methodist Health System Foundation
  • Kellie Chavez Greene – Director, Nonprofit Leadership & Effectiveness, Greater New Orleans Foundation
You can see both presentations in their entirety below.

We have been proud to help our clients tell the stories that highlight their ingenuity; their flexibility; and most of all, their resilience. If your organization has a story to tell and would like us to feature it in a blog on our website, please email Michele Buckingham. We’d love to help you highlight your lessons learned so that others can learn from your valuable experience.
