At LaPorte, our employees are more than just part of the team—they’re the heart of everything we do. Each individual brings unique skills, experiences, and passions that drive our success and enrich our workplace culture. In our “Faces of LaPorte” series, we’re shining a spotlight on the talented individuals who make LaPorte an exceptional place to work and grow. Through their stories, we aim to celebrate the diverse backgrounds, achievements, and contributions of our team members, giving you a closer look at the people who power our company every day.

Looking back, what was the most surprising thing you discovered about LaPorte during your first few weeks here?

It was not at all what I thought public accounting was all about. While in college, public accounting was the furthest thing on my mind, I absolutely did not want to do it. Mainly because I knew I wanted to get married and start a family right away and working those crazy hours you hear about; I just assumed wouldn’t be the right fit for me. After working in the industry for 2 years and not loving it, I gave LaPorte a shot and it is the best decision I could have made. Yes, it’s hard work, and the hours, at times, can be tough, but on a day-to-day basis, I truly love my job. I challenge my brain daily; I am constantly learning new things and can continuously push myself to be better. And all while progressing in my career I have the flexibility to be there for my family and be there for my daughter as much as possible, and everyone at LaPorte supports that.

Who were the biggest supporters in your corner, and what role did they play in helping you cross the finish line?

My husband was by far my biggest supporter while studying for the exam. Having a daughter made things a little more complicated, but he took on all the responsibilities that he needed which allowed me to focus on the exam and reach my goals. I truly could not have done it without him. My coworkers played a big role in motivation as well. A lot of us are/were taking the exam at the same time, so sharing successes and failures really helped me to continue to push through knowing that it was possible, and we would get there soon!

What kept you going on the toughest days when you felt pulled in three different directions?

Setting goals and reminding myself how serious I was about reaching those goals and prioritizing things that really mattered to me. There were plenty of things I had to start saying no to, but in the end, was worth it because I knew what I wanted to do for myself. My daughter also helped me push through. Knowing one day she would be able to look back and realize how hard I work for her and for myself, I can only hope that it motivates her and that she knows she is capable of doing anything she sets her mind to.

How did your daughter react when you told them you passed the CPA exam—any cute stories or celebrations you’ll always remember?

While I was studying, just about every Saturday and most Sundays my husband and daughter would leave our house so I could have quiet dedicated time for studying. There were plenty of birthday parties and family events I missed during that time. After passing, I was able to attend all the fun things with them. The first Saturday I was able to tag along my daughter said, “Mommy, you’re coming with us? Thank you so much for not studying anymore,” and gave me the biggest, tightest hug. It was the sweetest thing because she was genuinely so happy I was able to do all the fun things again!

What advice would you give someone just starting at LaPorte to help them thrive?

My advice would be to pass the exam as soon as possible. It only gets more difficult the busier you get! Also, if you are willing to work hard, LaPorte will be on your side and willing to give you the opportunity to grow. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and to make mistakes. I’ve learned the most when taking on tasks I wasn’t 100% confident in. LaPorte is a great place to work and learn and the support here is unmatched, so don’t be afraid to use the support!
