Stepping into the world of public accounting right out of college, Kate McKeever quickly found her place at LaPorte, where the supportive culture and focus on personal development resonated with her career aspirations. Having been with the firm for two years now, she reflects on her journey from graduation to finding her place in the ever-evolving landscape of public accounting.
“During undergrad, I did two internships in the chemical industry, and I had decided that private accounting wasn’t for me. I wanted to join public accounting, so I applied to LaPorte after a Meet the Firms career fair.”
Kate says that LaPorte’s culture and leadership played a big role in her decision to join the firm. “What really made me want to join LaPorte is how much I could tell that the directors cared about the development of their team and how much they were willing to invest in the Houston market,” she says.
Kate’s passion for learning and connecting with people aligns with her work in audit. “I really enjoy talking to a bunch of different people and learning about their backgrounds,” she shares. “I thought that by joining audit, I would get to talk to different people in different industries, and that’s my favorite part about my job—getting to learn our clients’ points of view, understand their processes, and help improve them.”
Her day-to-day work involves both working closely with the audit team and interacting with clients. “I kind of run as a middleman between the client and our team, trying to meet both the client’s expectations and the directors’ expectations,” Kate explains.
Kate takes pride in staying true to herself amid the challenges of being a young professional. “One of the things I’m really proud of is that when I make decisions, I stand by them,” says Kate. “When I know it’s right, I really know who I am.”
For Kate, LaPorte’s culture of care and collaboration is what makes the firm special. “I really see the potential in this office and the people I work with,” she reflects. “Everyone here genuinely cares about their people, their development, and their clients.
When asked what sets LaPorte apart, Kate points to the firm’s ability to adapt and support growth. “I think LaPorte’s superpower is meeting people where they are,” she says. “It’s about meeting clients where they are, helping them grow, improving their processes, and meeting their deadlines.”
